Dream seaside holiday for farm children

first time: This dream became true for 27 learners of the
Vlakteplaas UCC Primary School near De Rust. Most of these
children had been living on farms in the Vlakteplaas and
Snyberg districts all their lives and had never been to the
beach.

Alternative fruits help manage risk

especially pomegranates, in the Little Karoo. This hardy fruit that
will produce a harvest from the same tree for many years, is becoming

The Little Karoo is their promised land
IT SELDOM HAPPENS that lucern, vineyards, fruit, jojoba beans, sheep
and beef cattle, a large Holstein dairy and a commercial compost plant
are established successfully on a former ostrich and seed farm.
The Nel family of Van Zylsdamme about 27 km from Ladismith on the road to
Laingsburg can turn their hand to anything. They are born and bred Little
Karoo producers who took over the farm 43 years ago from a former academic,
dr. Fransie van Zyl. The children were all born while their parents were
still farming approximately 100 km away on Groenfontein outside of Calitzdorp.
