Description:

The Donkey Trail will be a three night, two day hike over the Swartberg Mountains to Die Hel. Supplies and equipment are to be carried by donkey. The trail package will include comfortable accommodation at Living Waters, Wyenek Camp and Die Hel. Wholesome meals, guides, donkeys and return transport will also be provided. The trail is +/- 11 km from Living Waters to Wyenek Camp and +/- 14 km from Wyenek Camp to Die Hel. The Wyenek Camp site is +/- 800m above Living Waters. 25 kilometers in total.

Itinerary:

Day of Arrival:
Hikers arrive from noon onwards to enjoy the farm, bond with their donkeys and an overnight stay at 'Living Waters'. Accommodation with full board will be in existing historic buildings, which are owned by Hans and Erika Calitz.

Hiking Day 1:
Hikers and donkeys ascend the Swartberg Mountain enjoying breath taking views over the Klein Karoo to overnight on the summit at Wyenek Camp. The Wyenek Camp will consist of standard two man dome tents to be erected on arrival on prepared camp sites. The maximum number of tent sites will be six and two for the guides. The tents and equipment will be stored in special 'trommels' that will remain on the mountain. A 'bedouin type tent' would be erected for shelter at the boma. Chairs and tables would be available for dining. A small ablution block and kraal for the donkeys will be built out of natural stone in a style similar to the existing 'murasies'

Hiking Day 2:
Donkeys return to Living Waters with handlers. The hikers continue with guides down into the Gamkakloof Valley for an overnight stay at Die Hel. Accommodation is available in historic cottages at Die Hel which is an existing Cape Nature tourism product. Meals for this overnight stay will be provided as part of the Donkey Trail package. Day of Departure Hikers explore the settlement at Die Hel and then travel back to Living Waters in the 'Donkey Bus' via the historic Swartberg Pass. Hikers depart after finger lunch to other destinations.

Food & Beverage:
All food and beverages for the Donkey Trail will be prepared and supplied by Living Waters.
