OCKIE OLIVIER OF the farm Welgeluk is a well-known ostrich producer in the Oudtshoorn area and one of the few producers in the world who understands and applies the art of producing beautiful ostrich plumes. With approximately 50 years of experience in breeding top-quality ostriches, Ockie has mastered the art and also knows how to "grow" feathers by carefully feeding, handling and nurturing them. Raising ostrich chicks is intensive and demanding

AT STEYLDRIFT ON the Volmoed flats Laubscher Coetzee farms on land that has belonged to the Coetzee family for generations. His father, the late Chris Coetzee, who for many years served as chairman of the KLEIN KAROO Group's board of directors, taught him many of the finer aspects, especially of ostrich farming.

Laubscher is also regarded as one of about five producers in the Klein Karoo who concentrate on breeding ostriches for good feather quality. Laubscher runs a fully integrated farming operation. This includes breeding, nesting, feed preparation, rearing of slaughter ostriches and lucern production for seed and haymaking purposes. [read more]

Fig fundis of the Karoo

Approximately 30 km along the Weltevrede road, which turns westward just outside Prince Albert, you will find Pieter en Suzelle Koorts's farm nestling in the shadow of the northern slopes of the Swartberg. It is not only the dry, hot summer days, cool nights and various mountain springs with ample fresh water that are ideal for growing excellent figs but also this area's sandy, loamy soil.

THE PRODUCTION OF pure, viable seed for vegetable and pasture industries is essential ensuring a sustainable food supply for humans and animals. The Klein Karoo is a unique farming region, which is ideally suited to vegetable seed production. Various factors enable seed growers to produce high-quality onion, carrot, beetroot, cut-beetroot, spring onion, cabbage, leek, pumpkin, radish and lucerne seed.

Vegetable seed is produced worldwide for commercial purposes. However, production in some regions of the world is hampered by climatic conditions. Since the Klein Karoo region is ideal for vegetable seed production throughout the year its seed growers are assured of a market. [read more]

Prince Albert's wines fly first class

BERGWATER VINEYARDS' WINE is served in business class on board KLM Royal Dutch Airlines for the second consecutive year during June and July 2006.

This winery is the first and only in the Great Karoo. Bergwater Vineyards is a joint venture between the two brothers Heimie (who is also an experienced airline pilot) and Stephan Schoeman, and Pim de Koekkoek - managing director of DKPG, a Dutch investors group.

The Bergwater Vineyard is situated in the exquisite Prince Albert Valley just outside the village of Prince Albert. The enterprise comprises five farms totalling 3000 hectares of which 110 hectares are established vineyards. The remainder of the land is utilised as a nature reserve.The cellar has the capacity to process 1500 tons of grapes, large enough to accommodate the total harvest. [read more]

THERE ARE VERY few fads when it comes to mohair farming. The Klein Karoo is an important mohair production area. South Africa is regarded the world leader in mohair production and marketing. Approximately 61% of the world's mohair is produced in South Africa. Most mohair is exported to China, Italy, France, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.

The economically important properties of mohair are fineness, length, style and character. Other aspects that play a role in determining the price of mohair are nett yield, pollution, preparation of clippings and grading. [read more]

Prince Albert: A true fruit paradise

IN THE VICINITY of Prince Albert and along the northern slopes of the Swartberg there are many hectares of export apricot, plum, nectarine and fig orchards. Fruit producers in the region are not only privileged to share in the natural beauty of the area but the climate is also ideal for growing stone fruit. In fact, it is the climate that offers producers a competitive edge, making them the preferred suppliers on world markets. Even if their fruit comes in only one week earlier than that of other producers, theirs is the early crop that opens the overseas market. The region's first apricots are ready for picking in October - earlier than any other region in the Western Cape. The KLEIN KAROO fruit producers in the area even beat other countries in the southern hemisphere which export summer fruit to Europe, the United Kingdom (UK) and the Middle East during the winter months. [read more]
