About Chandelier

An Oudtshoorn Game Lodge & Ostrich Show Farm

Chandelier Game Lodge & Ostrich Show Farm is located between the lush green Garden Route and the wide-open spaces of the Klein (Little) Karoo, with the Outeniqua- and Swartberg mountain ranges as backdrops. This Oudtshoorn Game Lodge is easily accessible, next to the N12 (Route 62), and is an ideal base from which to explore the “Garden of Eden” along the Garden Route, as well as the rich diversity of the Klein Karoo and Route 62. The lodge is 7 km from Oudtshoorn and 48 km from George and the George Airport.

Chandelier consists of 3500 ha of succulent Karoo, river bush veldt and Cape “fynbos”. The 122km of “land rover tracks” make game viewing safaris on Chandelier an unforgettable experience, creating timeless memories.

Chandelier hosts a large population of antelope – 23 species in total. Large numbers of game, such as Sable Antelope, Lechwe, Waterbuck, Bontebok and Kudu are free roaming the rolling hills. Spot the giraffes from the comfort of the land rovers or come real close to the animals on either the quad bikes or on foot. If you are lucky, you may spot the elusive black backed jackal or even catch a glimpse of the rare, indigenous leopard.

Giraffe Experience Oudtshoorn:

Our two giraffes were rescued from certain death after Shorty’s mother injured herself and Shiela’s mother had no milk to feed her during the terrible drought. Shorty and Shiela are free to re-join the rest of the Chandelier giraffe herd whenever they like. Fortunately, they get so spoiled by the guests that they prefer to stay close to the restaurant. When they become sexually active in the next few years, they may decide to join the rest of the herd.

Guests can get beautiful photos while giving Shorty and Sheila their much-loved milk bottle. During the rest of the day, guests are welcome to buy food/pellets for the giraffes in the Curio Shop and Shorty and Sheila will eat out of their hands.

Buffalo Experience:

Chandelier offers guests the ideal opportunity to learn more about the once endangered Cape Buffalo. With our Buffalo experience, go home with the most amazing close-up photos as well as knowledge of one of South Africa’s “Big Five” members.

It is a short drive or easy walk to the Buffalo Breeding Herd. Either capture the moment accompanied by the game viewers or from behind a secure electric fence. Calves are born throughout the year, therefore, you will be fortunate enough to spot the young babies, close to their majestic parents.

Ostrich Farm Tours:

Ostriches remain one of the most fascinating attractions in South Africa, therefore great care has been taken on Chandelier to make the ostrich show farm tour an unforgettable experience.

The tour is an easy walk through the farm starting off at the breeding ostriches with their small chicks. Our professional guides will ensure this educational tour is not only fun, but also provides you with a lot of information about the biggest bird in the world. Your guide will explain every aspect of the ostrich, including the anatomy. You will have a chance to feed the ostriches by hand.

The highlight of the tour will be when our professional jockeys compete in the famous Chandelier Ostrich race. For the brave there is the possibility of sitting and riding of the ostrich….

Sundowner Bush Dinner:

A perfect ending to an unforgettable day at Chandelier is the popular Sundowner Bush Dinner. Guests are transported to our lapa (shelter) high up in the mountains on open land rovers. At the lapa we spoil our guests with a sundowner, while they adore the unique sunset over the Swartberg mountains. While the magnificent sunset gives way to the silence of the night, the guides do a traditional South African braai (barbeque), including kudu, ostrich and springbuck. The traditional African three course dinner includes a variety of traditional South African delicatessen.
Drinks are excluded – please place your order for drinks before departing or when you book for the sundowner.

After dinner we do guided star gazing from the lapa, where the stars of the Southern Hemisphere are so bright that you can almost touch them. We follow the star gazing up with a night game drive with spot lights to watch the behaviour of the creatures of the night. After the Sundowner Bush Dinner a peaceful sleep and sweet dreams, in our luxurious tented chalets, are guaranteed.

Our Khoi-San Trail:

The Chandelier Khoi-san trail gives guests a taste of the way the real, indigenous people of the Klein Karoo lived and survived in the harsh conditions of this semi-desert landscape.

The tour starts with a short game drive in an open game viewer, allowing guests to observe the landscapes of the Khoi-san. The drive leads to a small, traditional Khoi-San hut. At the hut, guests are introduced to Njoem – Chandelier’s own Khoi-San. Njoem leads the way in his traditional clothing and explains his traditions and culture to the guests, while one of the Chandelier Game Rangers acts as an interpreter.

The highlight of the Khoi-san trail is the traditional Kudu-dung competition in which guests are invited to participate. (Njoem only shares this secret game with his guests!!!)

The informative tour takes about an hour and 15 minutes and is Highly Recommended.
