History of Oudtshoorn

The history of Oudtshoorn is rich and varied. Rock Art is found on many private farms in the area, giving us a glimpse into the history and religion of the original settlers in the area. Ostriches form the basis of the development of the town and the associated “Feather Palaces” that sprang up during the ostrich feather boom. Beautiful sandstone buildings abound in and around the town, most of them designated National Monuments. Visit the CP Nel Museum which details the history of the Lithuanian Jews who settled here.
